Trip to Phx, AZ to test the repairs

Living the #CopCarLife
In Phoenix, AZ outside the @TreehouseBakery
After all the repairs, this 300+ mile road trip (road test) went well , no issues, no leaks

Brakes & the gas leak are the next project

Rear End Leak

I saw a new leak on the concrete. So I jacked up the rear end to take a look

It was the passenger side wheel bearing again, leaking all over the wheel. (See video)

So I got new (better) bearings & seals and bought / loaned the tools for the job at the auto parts place

Bought new jack stands, and borrowed a good floor jack

So i was able to raise the rear end pretty high, a lot easier to work on here than it as the last time around a year ago when we had to do this job on the way home from Vegas in a friend’s dad’s garage

Had to pick a 94+ degree day to work on it, LOL

One side is in the shade, one side is not..

You can see the channel on the passenger side axle (right) from the bad bearings

Parts list:

  • RTV Blue
  • three quarts of 80W90 gear oil (Valvoline synthetic 75W-140) ?
  • outer bearings & seals

I hope I dont need this video

New headlights

New headlights !! Only took 10 minutes start to finish, lights cost less than $50 shipped

Wow, big difference at night

Clean or replace your headlights!! I think these are 2/3 brighter from inside.. wow

Now I need to aim them.. any theroys how to set up #CopCar headlights?

Leaking Oil Gasket

Went to change oil, and the guys saw a lot of oil leaking, so they filled it up and sent me to repair it. I grabbed a set of hoses and the new gasket and jacked up the car.

Not many videos o the process since it is so tedious to get to, but Ii managed to figure out the removal and replacement of the gasket

I did manage to break the bolt that holds the oil cooler hoses, so i had to drill it out and replace the 9mm/10mm bolt

Replaced the oil filter & changed oil too

In the end, the repair ent ell, and has remained fixed, money saved

Vegan Monte Cristo at the @PomegranateCafePhx in Phoenix, AZ
Wow, this was an amazing sandwich. Their menu was full of interesting options, so I asked what their special was, and this sounded good.. I don’t think I ever ate a “real” Monte cristo, so I have nothing to compare it to. . But this was great!
And the mustard potato salad was worth a trip itself
The restaurant is just a mile or so off I-10 on the south (Tucson) side of Phoenix .. so it will be a regular stop in the future

Phoenix Trip Dec 2016 (SAR Show)

20161203_071541

Headed up to Phoenix for the SAR show & Gun Show 20161203_073728

Had to fill up with gas, had a little trouble with the hood not opening, but it worked its self out. (Note to self, lube the hood latch)

Then added a few quarts of oil

Found a GREAT parking spot20161203_145245

Stopped for food, and the cop car wouldnt start. A quick look under the hood made it clear it was the battery disconnect had come loose, so an easy fix20161203_160155

Stopped at a Vegan place on the south end of Phoenix, Great Food !!

What do you eat then?

Driving in the early morning, before the sun comes up

Cop cars are a pleasure to drive, especially on highways.
They are louder than regular cars, but their awesomeness makes up for that

2016 Red Dawn Filming Locations

20160419_174922

Headed to Northern New Mexico to see the locations where they filmed Red Dawn

20160419_134403
This was an excellent drive and fun to see the rocks from the movie

20160419_172654Before the trip, an oil change and top off the fluids at the chain-shop, then a full tank of gas and we hit the road to see New Mexico gun shops & the Red Dawn movie filming locations

2016 SHOT Show

This was a great year at the SHOT show. Our 11th year attending as media, but  the first year we were able to bring the dog. The drive up was great and un-eventfull20160117_162243Las Vegas is always a fun place to visit
20160123_115338

Good parking this year

The car started to leak some fluid from the rear driver side wheel

20160121_172445

So, after the show, I decided to fill the differential at a local shop ($7 cost of fluid is all they charged)
and see how bad the leak did on the way home
20160123_135338

The car only got a few hundred miles (to Kingman, AZ)
Used the AAA 200-mile tow to get the car down to Phoenix, to a friends driveway

20160123_202941

We stayed in a Walmart parking lot overnight, and started the day at the local auto parts store

20160124_091156

Rented the tools to replace the rear axle seal.
And did the repair in a friends driveway in Phoenix, AZ

20160124_144601

Turned out to be an in-expensive fix, (under $10 in parts)

Loading the Trunk

Road trips in the Cop Car have plenty of space for gear

From top to bottom / left to right:

  • Paper towels & first aid next to spare tire (Padded Seat on Spare Tire)
  • Smoke Signal, Sleeping Pads, AMP-3 First Aid Kit (Black Roll-Up), Ammo Can Seat / Storage, Box of stuff for trip, Camo Bag of Clothes, Tool-Backpack
  • Camo Backpack, Socket Set, Square bucket of road tools (Jack handle, Fire Ext, etc), Floor Jack & Empty Gas Can

20160117_061340

With a slight re-arrangement for some extra bags, Jack Stands & Suitcase

20160117_061751

Some parking job..

I take pics of the idiots who park weird, just in case they drive away as bad as they parked. Never needed to follow up after a pic like this, but i think it’s worth the moment it takes to take them, what do you think?

2015 SHOT Show

20150121_011659

Another trip to Las Vegas for the SHOT show
(our 10th year covering the show for our websites)20150121_09172820150120_151232

Prep for this trip was easy, as the car was running well

20150119_123349

Back home and a carwash to get all the road dirt off20150119_125537  20150122_072604

The trunk for this trip, all the basics, and plenty of room for the gear for the show

Flat Tire

Got to change the tire on the side of the road today.
All things concidered it was an easy fix.. and now to fix or repair…20140507_18240320140515_094031 20140507_182408

Always carry a Full Size Spare

Had a flat tire today, but swapped it out in no time. It was a nice day, plenty of light. I pulled off Ina and had a lot of room too.

20140507_182403

I carry a full size spare tire and a floor jack. So repair (or replacing) the damaged one doesn’t have to be done immediately

20140507_182408

I try to buy surplus cop tires, but these are a chain-store brand20140515_094031

Oklahoma Tollways

Living in Arizona, I get used to NO toll-ways. So driving them in Oklahoma was annoying and costly when we missed an exit and added 36 miles to our trip before hitting the hotel outside Tulsa, OK

20121014_212830

Missed an exit, needed to drive 16 miles to turn around, then pay to get back on and again to exit at our original exit20121014_211645

First Push Bars

Couldnt wait to get the Bumper Guard in place

IMAG1947

Needed to take off all the trim, and attach the supports to the frame, then replace the white trim. The push bar attaches to those bases

IMAG1951The first bar I had (from craigs list) was not the correct one, and looked weird on the Crown Vic

FREE Inspection at Perfection Auto Works

IMAG1320

Took the new cop car to Perfection Auto Works for the FREE Inspection they offer on Liberty Watch Radio on KVOI

Good to have the bumper to bumper inspection done by competent mechanics. They gave me a list of points and where the cop car stood

Thanks to Mike and the crew for the greak work, service and information
